Chanson Alkaline Water Ionizers
Citric Acid Cleaning Instructions
Your Water Quality and Chanson Recommended Citric Acid Cleaning Frequency
Your Chanson Alkaline Water Ionizer is a sophisticated home appliance that has many internal components. The most important of these components is the Electrode Chamber where your source water passes through the ionizer for producing acidic or alkaline water every time your ionizer is powered on.
With use and time, the Electrode Chamber inside your Chanson Alkaline Water Ionizer becomes scaled with calcium and other minerals from your water source, much like a hot water kettle or pot.
It is important to perform Citric Acid Cleaning (as described below) of your Chanson Alkaline Water Ionizer Electrode Chamber (not physically accessible by you) with regular frequency as determined by the following criteria:
- If your water source has >200 ppm (parts per million) dissolved solids, then suggest citric acid cleaning every 3 months
- If your water source has 100 – 200 ppm (parts per million) dissolved solids, then suggest citric acid cleaning every 6 months
- If your water source has <100 ppm (parts per million) dissolved solids, then suggest citric acid cleaning every 12 months
Additional Considerations For Citric Acid Cleaning Frequency
- If your Chanson Alkaline Water Ionizer is used regularly to produce a lot of Strong Acid or Strong Alkaline water, then you should perform the Chanson Citric Acid Cleaning Procedure every 2 months
- On Chanson Alkaline Water Ionizers equipped with a Mineral Port – used for either producing extremely Strong Acidic Water with Himalayan Pink Salt or for producing extremely Strong Alkaline Water with Calcium Salt Crystals – and that you regularly produce either extremely Strong Acidic Water or extremely Strong Alkaline Water, then you should perform the Chanson Citric Acid Cleaning Procedure every 2 months
pH Alkalinity Testing Recommendations
- Suggest testing the pH of your Chanson Alkaline Water Ionizer on Standard Alkaline Water setting monthly with the pH Indicator Drop Test Kit included with your Chanson Alkaline Water Ionizer shipment. By testing the pH of your Chanson Alkaline Water Ionizer in Standard Alkaline Water setting monthly, you will know what color pH your Chanson Alkaline Water Ionizer normally produces with your water source. If upon regular testing you see a test result with a different pH color then ‘normal’, it is probably time for a Citric Acid Cleaning.
- A good tip for keeping your Chanson Alkaline Water Ionizer Electrode Chamber cleaner for longer periods of time is to always run your Chanson Alkaline Water Ionizer on Purified Water setting for 5 seconds after using your ionizer and before turning your ionizer off. This will flush any concentrated minerals out from the Electrode Chamber on a regular basis.
- Following the above recommendations will ensure your Chanson Alkaline Water Ionizer will function optimally for many years to come.

1 – Locate Filter Compartment Door on left side of your Chanson Alkaline Water Ionizer.
2 – Gently press Filter Compartment Door inwards at indented pivot point and pull on door so as to gain access to the Filter Assembly area inside Filter Compartment. Be careful not to extend Filter Compartment Door beyond its range of motion.
3 – Reach in to Filter Compartment and slightly pull Filter Assembly outwards, being careful not to extend it beyond its range of motion.
4 – Remove Filter Cap and Filter (attached to the Filter Cap) from Filter Assembly by twisting Filter Cap counter-clockwise with one hand while holding Filter Assembly with other hand.
5 – Remove Filter from Filter Cap by twisting them in opposite directions.
6 – Remove Flat Clear Disc from top of Filter Cap or from top of Filter, which ever area it is stuck too.
7 – Remove all water from inside Filter Assembly by turning alkaline water ionizer on its side slightly, or by using a turkey baster to suction water out. You may need to do this 2-3 times to remove all water.
8 – Heat, NOT BOILING, 1 cup / 250 mL / 8 ounces of store bought DISTILLED WATER.
9 – Mix 3 tablespoons of Citric Acid Powder into the 1 cup / 250 mL / 8 ounces of hot water and stir until completely dissolved.
10 – Pour the hot 1 cup / 250 mL / 8 ounces of dissolved citric acid and water mixture into Filter Assembly and screw Filter Cap back on. DO NOT install Filter during this process.
11 – Select Purified Water setting on your Chanson Alkaline Water Ionizer and turn water flow ON for 3-4 SECONDS ONLY, just before water flows out of unit, then immediately shut ionizer off. This allows the hot dissolved citric acid and water mixture to flow from the Filter Assembly into your Chanson Alkaline Water Ionizer Electrode Chamber.
NOTE: Immediately lift Chanson Alkaline Water Ionizer Drain Tube (exiting back bottom of ionizer) and tie it straight up to main Flexible Water Spout with a bag tie, string, or piece of tape so as not to drain the dissolved citric acid and water mixture after you shut water flow off.
12 – Let hot dissolved citric acid and water mixture sit in your Chanson Alkaline Water Ionizer for a minimum of 60 minutes (and up to 24 hours if possible) for thorough cleaning – Citric Acid will not damage your Chanson Alkaline Water Ionizer Electrode Chamber.
13 – Once the dissolved citric acid in water mixture has stayed in your Chanson Alkaline Water Ionizer for above recommended time, untie and lower the drain tube back into the sink.
14 – Flush your Chanson Alkaline Water Ionizer by selecting Purified Water setting and leaving on for 5 minutes, then shut off for 10 minutes, and then flush for an additional 5 minutes on Purified Water setting.
15 – Test pH of your Chanson Alkaline Water Ionizer on Standard Alkaline setting and compare to your previous pH testing results. If desired improvement is not seen, repeat procedure up to 3 times. If you have gone for long periods without a flush and you know you have very hard water and the flush procedure is not working, you may need to send your Chanson Alkaline Water Ionizer to our Chanson Canada Vancouver Service Center for a thorough cleaning at additional costs.
16 – If your Chanson Alkaline Water Ionizer pH Test on Standard Alkaline setting is normal, then make sure water flow to ionizer is off and it is time to re-install existing filter (or Replacement Filter PJ6000 if time to do so) as per the following steps:
a) Locate Filter Compartment Door on left side of your Chanson Alkaline Water Ionizer.
b) Gently press Filter Compartment Door inwards at indented pivot point and pull on door so as to gain access to the Filter Assembly area inside Filter Compartment. Be careful not to extend Filter Compartment Door beyond its range of motion.
c) Reach in to Filter Compartment and slightly pull Filter Assembly outwards, being careful not to extend it beyond its range of motion.
d) Remove Filter Cap from Filter Assembly by twisting Filter Cap counter-clockwise with one hand while holding Filter Assembly with other hand.
e) Re-install or replace Filter on Filter Cap by twisting them in opposite directions.
f) Re-install Flat Clear Disc on top of Filter.
g) Re-install Filter Cap with Filter on Filter Assembly by turning clockwise firmly to a stop.
h) Gently push Filter Assembly back in to your Chanson Alkaline Water Ionizer.
